Semi Healthy Strawberry Tofu Cheesecake

image

It was my co-worker’s birthday and she’s pretty health conscious but wanted a cheesecake at the same time. So I wanted to find a way to ‘lighten’ the cheesecake and see if I can knock down the fat and calories without affecting taste.

image

I have read of people toying around with the idea of a ‘Tofu Cheesecake’ and figured Tofu’s pretty healthy and decided to use that as the base for my ‘semi-healthy’ cheesecake.

Feel better!

Thanks guys! I’m feeling tons better since I rested for 2 days and have been taking all the Chinese herbal supplements I can get my hands on (Chicken Essence, Benedict Dom, Tong Kwai Soup lol). It’s a bug that’s been going around my office as my co-workers had it last week and were out for a couple of days. I’m gonna tap this sickness and get back to the mats ASAP.

Scratch that last post I ain't fatigued, I'm sick

I now have a fever. Great. I didn’t oversleep myself to fatigue, I am sick! Well it makes me feel better that I’m not whining over nothing. Now fever be gone so I can go back to training. >(

Where do I train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

image

jrfamilia replied to your post: favourite fitblrs?

“Being thin is no indication of being healthy.” amen.. Where do you train (bjj)?

Amen! I know a couple of girls who are thin but are so unhealthy (high cholesterol levels, high body %, Liver problems,) and a couple of girls who are ‘big’ in size but super healthy. Anyway, I train at Leverage Combat Academy in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. The main instructor is Marcos Escobar.

Since we’re on the question of BJJ and training, I’ll put this together with Anon’s question:

How many times do you train a week?

When work isn’t kicking my ass, I train 7X a week. When work’s being tough I train 4-5 times a week. That’s just my BJJ training, I also do a separate workout for Strength and Conditioning.

favourite fitblrs?

Sorry it took so long to get back to you Anon! Most of my favorite fitblrs are people I’m following so you can check that. But usually my criteria is:

  1. Positive messages.
  2. Inspires people to workout.
  3. Posts some personal posts (I don’t usually follow a ton of reblog Tumblrs. I just have 1-2 and they usually fill my quota of inspirational stuff).
  4. No ‘Thinspo’ at all. I against Thinspo with every fibre of my body. Being thin is no indication of being healthy. There are Olympic athletes who would be killed by the Thinspo community for being so called /fat/. I’m all about the healthy and not about the skinny.

Since Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is my obsession, I also follow BJJ blogs which may or may not have a Fitblr theme at all.

Hope that helps!

Last minute lovelies

I swear to god this is going to be my last birthday post (People must be thinking ‘wtf man, it’s been a month after your birthday and you’re still celebrating?!’ Indeed I am! ^__^). Anyway last weekend, I got some last minute birthday presents:

My awesomest girl pal Vironia gave me the best t-shirt ever.

It’s a health nut with a pink wrist and head band!!!!

And my awesome co-workers gave me a pair of running shoes since I ‘lunged’ my old ones to death (no seriously, I tore the sides open doing lunges!). Love the black and the pink. Such a nice combo.

Since it was Thanksgiving last Thursday (and gosh do I miss the US, my time there and the Turkey meals) I’m so thankful for my life at it’s current moment… It’s so full of win I can’t even describe or contain it in one paragraph. :3

Friends - offline and online

image

Guess what I woke up to this morning?! An awesome photocropping of a ‘Cupcake Armbar’ thanks to my awesome BJJ blogging mate Jiu Jiu.

It’s weird but the notion or the concept of making ‘online friends’ that later turn to ‘offline’ friends isn’t new to me. I found my bestfriend online (weird thing is that her aunt knows my mum really well so I had actually met her 10 years before I met her online at her aunt’s wedding. I just couldn’t remember since we were 7 at that time.). And a lot of my closest friends were friends that I met through the Anime and Cosplay Forums during my teens. Even though I hardly watch Anime or even cosplay anymore, the friendships I made during that time period is something I cherish to this very day (like Fie for example. I met her thru what is now the defunct Malaysia Cosplay Club. We don’t cosplay anymore but we’re still awesome friends and I was granted the honour of being her bridesmaid during her wedding ^^).

I guess it’s really easy to feel connected with people when they’re into the same passions as you are. You kinda ‘get’ what the other person is talking or thinking about and you know exactly where they’re coming from. So I’m pretty sure I’m gonna eventually meet some of you on my Tumblr community as well *winks*. I have a pretty good feeling about this. :)

Anyway, back to Jiu Jiu…. I’m super excited because she’s going to visit me in Malaysia during Chinese new year and since the city’s in ‘festival’ mode, it’s gonna be an epic visit. I am thinking of all the yummy things I’ll cook and bake for her while she’s here. And since it’s CNY time, I’m gonna be cooking loads of traditional New Year auspicious stuff for her to try. So yay another ‘online’ friend turned ‘offline’.

CAN”T WAIT FOR YOU TO GET HERE JIU JIU.

The Ask function on Tumblr is ASHJHDFS*#(@*(#*@(#(*#

Is it just me or does the ask function on Tumblr keep ‘timing out’ or something? It takes me a minimum of like 5-6 clicks before I can send a question/reply thru and honestly it’s pretty darn annoying. >_>

I always seem to get this error:

And I have to go back several times before I can send the answer thru! Any tips on how to get the Ask function to work properly?!

Re: Latest Training Tuesday post

Thanks darling for pointing this out. One of my closest guy friends does MMA, and hasn’t touched a single weight in years. His body is on point & his fitness levels put most of the guys in my weight room to shame.

The most importing thing is understanding the priority pyramid when it comes to fat loss: 1) Nutrition 2) Anaerobic 3) Aerobic

While weight training is considered anaerobic, remember that there are tons of variations to resistance training. During the month I took a break off the iron, I invested my time in hot yoga many times a week. My instructor was the bomb, and my body was always shaking. Checking in with my strength levels after the break: No drops. ;) So it doesn’t alwaaysssss have to be the iron itself, <3

Also, please follow @cupcakearmbar if you loved the Ronda Rousey video I posted yesterday. ;) She’s a kickass Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and a huge inspiration as well.

Thx for the plug Fit Bunney! :)

BTW if you aren’t following @fitbunney you should! Her Tumblr is about positivity, fitness, self love and acceptance of your own body. I love to see her posts on my dashboard. <3

Training Tuesday: What Women Should Never do (but often do) While Trying to Get in Shape + How To Get Started (Plan Included)

fitbunney:

THE BIGGEST MISTAKE commonly made by ladies is deciding to lose weight FIRST before beginning to weight train.

This thought process is 90% personal theory to avoid “bulking up” and 10% excuses to not step outside a comfort zone. Ask anyone with this mindset enough of the right questions and I guarantee it will boil down to the fear of bulking up or getting too big. I’ll get into some of the 10-percenters, but let’s tackle the majority first.

Many women (and even men these days) feel that shedding weight through cardio and diet before resistance training will lead to a leaner looking body in a faster time. The thought is to lose all the excess pounds on the scale and then “tone up” the leftovers for a sleeker, sexier, firm body.

Awesome article for those who are looking to tone and lose weight. Lucky for me Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an amazing source of anaerobic cardio and also does provide some strength training benefits in a way. Although I do cross train weights now, initially I was doing only BJJ and still lowered my body fat % significantly. Have you ever tried to wrestle 75 kilo guys going at 3/4 to full power? You tell me if that doesn’t build /some/ strength lol!

PS The only thing I disagree with the article is the Yoga bit. There are many types of Yoga and there are some challenging styles like Ashtanga that will build strength (and kick your butt in the process). It’s been said that if you get through Ashtanga’s Sun Salutations level 2, you have the athletic conditioning and ability of a high level gymnast (according to my Yoga instructor). Don’t discount it till you try it as it will build your strength up like nobody’s business!

superBJJhero name

novarenata replied to your post: I think you have a really nice blog here. One that does a fantastic job of capturing BJJ from a women’s point of view.

Holler back, yo! Correction! There’s only five in KK. But come to think of it, just 13 female grapplers in the whole of Malaysia? We certainly need more girls, man. Seriously. P/s - Monstrinha is a cool name. What’s yours superBJJhero name? :)

Initially my superBJJhero name was Pinky because I like love the colour Pink (my car is pink for crying out loud! LOL) and my coach just loved calling me Pinky. But lately he’s been calling me SuSu (and so does everybody else now!) because that’s the first syllable of my Chinese name and you know that’s hecka weird because it means ‘Milk’ in Malay. Hahahaha maybe one day I’ll get a cool superbJJhero name like Monstrinha, Sakuraba, Thor, John Barber, lollll

Do you have a superBJJhero name? :)

(also open to all my readers to reply too! I’d like to know what your superBJJhero name is!)

I came across a this picture of the Gracie girls (Kyra, her mom Flavia and half-sister Rayra) on an MMA forum and thought, damn, to be those guys training in their gym…

And I found another picture of Kyra and her mom, Flavia.

image

Gee whiz, I’d like to look this good when I have a daughter Kyra’s age. Most importantly, I’d like to still be able to train Jiu-Jitsu at that age. So inspiring! And envy-inducing.

Awesome post by my buddy Nova on the Gracie female practioners. The perfect combination of beauty and strength. When I’m a mother I hope to be just as graceful as Flavia Gracie :)

I think you have a really nice blog here. One that does a fantastic job of capturing BJJ from a women's point of view. The fact that it's locally based is even better (I'm living in Thailand btw). I have given your link out to a lot of my female friends in hopes they would take up BJJ. I'm very curious as to how many women do you think practice BJJ in Malaysia? In Thailand it isn't much, maybe a handful in my gym.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww thank you so much for your kind words. I started this Tumblr as a scrapbook of my BJJ journey to help motivate and inspire myself through competitions and training. I’m glad that other people are finding it inspiring as well. ^___^

Hmmmmmmm that’s a good question! In our network of gyms: we have Monstrinha and me at our KL gym, there’s a Judo BB girl in Penang and there are 6 girls 5 girls at KK (holler out to mah buddy Nova who corrected me! ^^). But as far as I know there aren’t any girls in the other BJJ gyms in Malaysia. So I guess that’s about 8 active girls?

Then there’s also girls who train grappling. There are 3 girls who train Monkey Jits under the Crazy Money Defence program and there are 2 girls who train MMA at a gym in PJ.

So I suppose if you add those girls, there would be a total of 13 girls in total who grapple pretty regularly in Malaysia.

Hopefully one day, we’ll have more girls that will train regularly! :)

(my first mission is get at least ONE girl in KL to join me and Monstrinha regularly at our gym, Any takers? Lol)

Lipnicki says he maintains his physique by participating in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Remember that cute kid from Jerry Maguire? Well he does BJJ too son. He’s currently a ‘blue, almost a purple’. I’ve been stalking his twitter (lol) and he’s very passionate about BJJ and fitness. Seems like training in BJJ was what got him working out and a healthy lifestyle. He likes to compete too. Well we all understand those feelings don’t we ;)

“

…there are 3 types of experiences one should go through to reach their full potential.

1) dominating a fellow student

2) getting dominated by a fellow student

3) and having a close battle with another student

All 3 have their ups and downs. They all have value. Stay in a balance and you will thrive. But remember, there is always a proper time to smash, get smashed and have a tough battle.”
